Offset and gravure printing are two major printing methods in the printing industry. Although they share some similarities in principles and characteristics, each has its own distinct advantages. In recent years, with advancements in computer technology, materials science, and laser technology, both offset and gravure printing have seen various new technologies that inject fresh vitality into their development and applications. Principles

Offset printing can be divided into two types: wet offset and dry offset. Wet offset relies on the principle that oil and water do not mix, causing the image and blank areas on the plate to become oil-loving and water-loving, respectively, allowing for the transfer of the image. In this process, it is essential to maintain a balance between ink and water. Dry offset, on the other hand, uses a silicone rubber layer as the blank part of the plate and employs specially formulated inks. Unlike wet offset, dry offset eliminates the need for dampening solution, improving operational performance.

The principle of gravure printing is comparatively simpler, as it directly transfers ink from the gravure plate to the substrate. The key distinction lies in the use of a doctor blade in gravure printing, with the image areas on the plate always positioned lower than the blank areas.

Practical experience shows that the dot area in gravure printing is generally larger than in offset printing, as gravure relies on ink layer thickness to reproduce color gradations and tones. This results in gravure printing being less delicate and softer than offset printing when depicting complex images such as faces. However, printed products from gravure exhibit vibrant colors, strong three-dimensionality, and accurate color reproduction, making them ideal for packaging applications.

Both offset and gravure printing have their relatively fixed areas of application, but they fiercely compete in markets such as calendars, high-end color magazines, and paper packaging products.

Offset and gravure printing each have unique characteristics in their production processes, summarized as follows:

  • Ideal for short-cycle printing, especially for time-sensitive products like newspapers;
  • Requires less space, lower capital investment, and fewer ancillary equipment.

  • Capable of double-sided printing on roll materials and printing on special materials like plastics and metals;
  • Short ink path delivery, simple principles, and easy operation.
  • In terms of printed product quality, gravure products tend to have a stronger visual impact and generally higher quality. Recent advancements in plate making and engraving technology, especially in laser imaging, have greatly improved the consistency of gravure products.

 

Cost

The cost of raw materials is a significant component of printing costs, encompassing plate making, paper, ink, and energy costs. Since the production costs for gravure plates are significantly higher than for offset plates, many people mistakenly believe that the cost of gravure printing is also higher. However, this is not entirely accurate.

In small-batch printing, gravure costs are indeed somewhat higher than offset; however, for fixed repetitive print jobs, such as packaging for cigarettes and alcoholic beverages, the cost difference diminishes quickly after multiple print runs, and gravure may even end up being cheaper than offset. In terms of printing on thin paper, gravure performs better than offset. For example, printing on 52g/m² high-grade calendar paper with gravure can achieve the desired effect, while offset would require at least 57g/m² coated paper. Therefore, in large-volume printing, the price difference between these two types of paper often leads printers to favor gravure. Moreover, for long-run jobs, the lifespan of gravure cylinders far exceeds that of offset plates.

In fact, both offset and gravure have their cost advantages, so the choice should depend on specific circumstances. For high-volume jobs requiring high quality, gravure is preferred; for smaller jobs (tens of thousands of prints or fewer) with lower quality demands, offset is more suitable.

 

Cycle

The production cycle is an important factor in selecting a printing method, and there are significant differences in production cycles between offset and gravure printing.

Gravure has developed a rigorous workflow, requiring client confirmation at each step from design to proofing to final printing. Additionally, gravure plates typically need to be transported from the plate-making site to the printing company, which undoubtedly extends the production cycle and increases costs. In contrast, offset printing follows a simpler and more direct workflow, usually completing the process from design to delivery in less than two weeks. Therefore, gravure currently has notable deficiencies in short-cycle printing, despite advancements in laser imaging technology and lightweight plastic rollers that could shorten gravure cycles. However, matching the speed of offset printing is unlikely to be realized in the near term.

 

Market

According to relevant data, offset printing accounts for about 40% of the global market, while gravure constitutes around 15%, flexo about 25%, and other printing methods about 20%. In the domestic market, the proportion of offset printing is expected to rise, while the shares of other printing methods will decrease correspondingly. Of course, these figures are not fixed; they will fluctuate based on various factors and the specific situation in the short term.

The trends in printing technology development will determine the market share of various printing methods in the future. Based on global printing development characteristics, it can be predicted that high-quality and short-run printing may become the focus of future growth. Continuous improvements in printing machine precision, advancements in printing processes and technologies, and enhancements in material properties have made quality improvements in printed products an inevitability. As the quality of printed materials rises, the demand for short-run printing continues to grow, creating opportunities driven by the diversification of information media and printed products. For instance, a magazine that had a circulation of over one million copies twenty years ago may now have a circulation of fewer than 200,000 due to the proliferation of similar magazines and competition from electronic media like television and the internet. In reality, this figure is a maximum limit for most domestic magazine circulations. While a few magazines may still exceed one million in circulation, they often have multiple printing sites, meaning that each site’s print volume is not substantial, typically classifying them as medium or short runs.

In light of market trends, offset printing has introduced technologies that meet evolving market demands, such as CTP systems that eliminate the need for film and digital printing systems capable of on-demand printing. These advancements not only enhance the quality of printed materials but also significantly shorten printing cycles, quickly opening up new markets. Gravure printing, historically reliant on long-run jobs, used to avoid jobs with fewer than one million prints. However, facing the reality that the number of print jobs like packaging for tobacco and alcohol, which may exceed one million prints, is dwindling, finding a foothold in competition with offset printing has become a primary challenge.

Both offset and gravure printing are significant methods in the printing market, each with its own technological and procedural strengths, and both are rapidly evolving. Their common goal is to continuously innovate technology to adapt to future trends in printing, providing customers with faster, higher quality, and lower-cost products. We should also select appropriate printing methods based on the characteristics of the printed products to maximize profits.
